The 28 quart is the tub to run when space is the constraint. It fits standard shelving depth, holds a shallower bed that colonizes faster, and lets you split a batch across more chambers — which means one contaminated tub costs you a fraction of a run instead of all of it. A monotub is a sealed fruiting chamber: a deep tub with a tight lid, ported for controlled gas exchange and filtered against contamination. Plugs stay in during colonization to hold carbon dioxide high, then come out to trigger and support fruiting. It remains the most productive low-tech method for bulk-substrate species.
